WHY A PRE-ORDER AND NOT CROWDFUNDING?

Why We’re Launching Chaos Uncovered as a Pre-Order Instead of a Kickstarter

When we first started talking about how to release Chaos Uncovered, the assumption was that it would go to Kickstarter.

That’s just how things are done now. Big RPG projects launch with countdowns, stretch goals, daily updates, and a lot of visible momentum. And for a while, that seemed like the obvious path.

But as the project developed and as we thought more seriously about what we’re trying to build with Red River RPG, we realized that the release model needed to match the philosophy of the work itself.

And that philosophy has always been about intention.

Letting the Project Breathe

Chaos Uncovered didn’t start as a trilogy. It started as a single adventure… something we wanted to run at our own tables.

Over time, it grew. Threads led to consequences. Consequences led to new stories. Before long, it became clear that this wasn’t just one adventure. It was a connected saga.

With that growth came bigger questions.

Not just about art and layout, or about supporting the upcoming Cypher release, but about pacing. About sustainability. About what kind of publisher Red River RPG should be.

Crowdfunding creates a moment. A spike of energy. A public event.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

But what we’re building here isn’t just a moment.

Choosing Steady Over Spectacle

The more we thought about it, the more we realized that a pre-order model gives us something we value more right now: stability.

Instead of tying development decisions to stretch goals or funding thresholds, we can focus entirely on finishing the work well.

We can take the time to refine art direction.
To polish layout.
To adjust for the newest system updates.
To prepare Roll20 support properly.

There’s no campaign clock dictating the pace. Just the work.

And for a first major release under Red River RPG, that felt important.

Building the Right Way

We’re in this for the long term.

Red River RPG isn’t just about Chaos Uncovered. It’s about building a catalog. Developing a design voice. Supporting Cypher and other indie systems in a way that feels thoughtful instead of rushed.

A pre-order model lets us grow deliberately. It keeps the scale manageable. It allows us to invest in human artists, careful editing, and clean presentation without adding pressure to expand scope just because a funding meter climbs.

It also gives early supporters a way to be part of the process… without turning the release into a high-stakes event.

Timing Matters

With a new edition of Cypher on the horizon, this window actually works in our favor.

It gives us time to make the necessary tweaks.

To refine compatibility.

To ensure the material feels current when it releases, not already dated.

Rushing to fit into a crowdfunding window didn’t feel aligned with that.

Moving Forward

Choosing pre-orders isn’t about playing it safe.

It’s about playing it long.

It’s about making sure that when Chaos Uncovered releases, it reflects the care and attention we’ve put into it, not the pace of a campaign cycle.

Red River RPG is just getting started. We’d rather build a foundation we can stand on for years than chase a single loud launch.

Thank you to everyone who’s been following along so far. Your support, interest, and thoughtful feedback have shaped this project more than you know.

The city is waking up.
